I realized something in a meeting today

Treering

While talking about visualizing time and evolution, it occurred to me that tree rings are naturally occurring data visualization... any other examples out there?

Stratigraphy is a big one, which is something I got to see personally while doing an archaeological dig in college, but the information can be at once richer and require more expert skill to date than the layers of a tree's rings.

I would say that humans are data visualizations as well. Using color, and shape mostly, you can determine age.

In may ways water represents a natural form of data visualization. Lakes represent a combination of rain fall and heat exposure, not to mention the soil indentations the water level reveals on the lake bed. Also ocean tides represent date and time in a similar fashion, based upon water level, ebb and flow.

Sweet pic. Would be funny if this was a digitally-enhanced photo.
